Perio Treatment Can Stop Your Tooth Pain

Sometimes a root canal procedure simply isn’t enough to bring health and healing back to your mouth. In these cases, it may be necessary to perform a root amputation, or root resection, of the diseased tooth. You may be a good candidate for this periodontal procedure if the infection in your tooth is confined to just one of the roots.

We can save most of the tooth by removing the diseased root and keeping the rest of the tooth intact. Your dentist can then cap the tooth with a crown or filling to help prevent further problems. When your treatment is complete, you’ll have restored biting and chewing capacity, plus you’ll be out of pain.

A tooth in the upper arch of your mouth may require a root amputation, while a tooth in the lower arch of your mouth may require a hemisection. We will let you know if this is a good option for you and your smile.

Common Questions About Perio Services

What type of perio services do you perform?

Common perio services that we perform here are root amputations (also called root resections) and hemisections. These two treatments are usually done to save part of a tooth if it’s infected. The advantage of these services is that we can save much of the structure of the original tooth. A crown can then be used to strengthen the tooth and prevent further problems.

How can perio services help me?

If just one of the roots of a tooth is infected, a root amputation will eliminate that root and save the rest of the tooth. Hemisections are usually needed in these cases, in which the tooth is cut down the middle and the damaged portion is removed. These treatments will stop your tooth pain and save as much of your tooth as possible.

How much do perio services cost?

Just as with most dental treatments, the cost for perio services can vary greatly from patient to patient. We would need to examine you first and take a set of digital images so we can work up a treatment plan. Then we would be able to provide you a cost for the service. As a convenience, we do offer third-party and in-house financing options.
